Week 2 @ School

Those who were on tour came back and got to interact with them. I had a class in the 5th period. But another teacher needed to switch her class with me. So I took my class in the 3rd period. It was a dry day and in the afternoon, the teachers and students jointly observed the dry day by engaging in cleaning activities. Since the Youth Festival was about to begin the next day, we were appointed as judges. 

I also came to know that there are a few students in the school, who come from an orphanage and also realized that the school promotes inclusive education by including students who have disabilities like Down syndrome and others.

Archana from class 8

Reached school early in the morning. Since it was the Youth Festival, students were dressed in colour and they were in a different mood from the regular working days. The youth festival was inaugurated by Manoj Suni, a theatre artist. I was the judge of English Elocution and Mappilappattu. Archana from class 8 whom I mentored received first prize in Poetry Recitation. The students who usually remain inattentive in class were so active and vibrant in the youth festival. So it is better to promote extra-curricular activities by providing them ample time and training.

The Youth Festival events continued on the 27th. The day was mostly reserved for dance items. Although it was a school-level competition, the students were all dressed up in costumes for various items like Thiruvathira, Oppana and so on. One thing I liked the most is that, even if there was only a single student participating in an event, the school provided them an opportunity to perform it instead of declaring them as winners.

It was a rainy day. I had class in the first period. There were only a few students in the class. I had to take a class in the third period since a teacher was on leave. There was a small issue in the class regarding students' approach to me and I was not able to take a proper class.

The students were mostly indifferent. Got to inform them that we were leaving for college for a month. I think that I could have collected feedback to make necessary improvements.

Dry Day

Week 1 @ School [Phase 1 Internship Programme]

 The first phase of the school internship programme as part of the B.Ed curriculum started on 18-09-2023, and I started my days at Amrita Girls High School, Parakode, Adoor.

The first week of the internship programme was a novel experience although I have faced and taught many students before in several tuition centres. The first day was an amalgam of excitement and nervousness. On the first day, 18-09-2023, I reached early in the school, found a place to settle down and waited for the students. There was the school assembly with prayer, pledge, news in English and Malayalam and a quiz session conducted by the students of class 9A. I had my class in the fifth period. The first day was a cool one. 

19-09-2023

The English sir asked me to select a poem for a student to recite at the sub-district youth festival. I gave her the poem "Middle Age". I had my class in the fourth period and got the chance to interact with the students and was able to deliver the first lesson. 

20-09-2023

I had my class in the first period itself. I was happy because all the students had completed the follow-up activity of the previous day. But I felt that some of them referred internet to complete it. I felt that it was better if they utilized their own creativity. There was also the practice of recitation and other items for the youth festival.

21-09-2023

Most of the teachers were on leave since the tour programme was beginning on the day. I had my class in the 2nd period. But the Biology teacher was engaging the students. She provided me with another period. However, I had to engage students of various classes due to the absence of teachers. The departure of the students to Mysore and Coorg was a wonderful scene. I completed the activities that were left in the previous chapter. I also had a negative experience because when I asked a student to listen in the class, she started crying. I feel that I should achieve emotional stability to handle the students of this age.

The school was silent since the students of class 10 were on tour. In the morning, a student came to me and asked to prepare an introduction for her recitation. I had class in the first period but had to swap with another teacher. Today I began a new chapter "Listen to the Mountain". In the free time, the students came to me and told me that I am a bit fast and I need to slow down to make the portions more understandable. The students were so interactive. Since it was heavily raining, the students were sent home a bit early than usual.
